About VAConnect
Africa’s largest managed Virtual Assistant agency — in business since 2008
17+ years. 250,000+ hours delivered. 98% client retention over 14 months. Two bad reviews. We’re not a marketplace, not a body shop, and not a stop-gap. We’re the managed partner that makes remote hiring work — for British and Irish businesses, since 2014.

Our story — the short version
VAConnect started in 2008 as Lime Tree Consulting, founded by Karen van Zyl, a serial entrepreneur with a long background in sales, marketing and operational systems. By 2014 it was clear: businesses didn’t need help with marketing strategy. They needed help executing it. Karen rebranded as VA Connect and pivoted to a fully managed virtual assistant model.
UK clients have been part of the journey since the beginning — and from 2014 onwards we built our UK presence deliberately, with a UK-facing site, UK invoicing, and a deep brief on UK business culture. Today we serve clients across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland — alongside our US, Australian and South African client bases.
What “Where Value, Authority & Connection meet” actually means
V is for Value
We drive measurable results for clients and meaningful growth for VAs. Every connection delivers impact, every partnership creates worth.
A is for Authority
We excel in remote work excellence. Through continuous upskilling, rigorous quality standards and industry leadership, we set the benchmark others follow.
C is for Connection
Behind every screen is a human. We foster genuine relationships — between VAs as a supportive team, and between VAs and clients as trusted partners.
The team you’ll actually work with
Karen van Zyl
Founder & CEO
Karen takes the first strategy call personally. 17 years building VAConnect; a lifetime building businesses before that. Her job, in her words, is “to be the catalyst entrepreneurs need to grow and succeed in business and life.”
Nikki
Talent & Matching Specialist
Nikki runs the Talent Discovery programme. She screens for skills, personality and cultural fit using three aptitude tests, a structured interview and reference checks — before any candidate reaches you.
Laurez
Operations Manager
Laurez runs the day-to-day of the business — capacity planning, escalations, onboarding choreography, replacement matching. The Carol Programme runs through her desk.
Marike
Client Success Manager
Marike is your named senior contact for the lifetime of the engagement. Quarterly check-ins, friction surfacing, and the human voice on the other end of the relationship.
Our four proprietary programmes
VAVarsity
Our in-house training school — a proprietary education portal where every VAConnect professional is upskilled in software platforms, online tools and industry-specific soft skills. Custom programmes are built around emerging client needs and AI tooling.
Atomic Energy
Anti-burnout wellness — diet, exercise, mental mobility, performance accountability coaching. Our VAs don’t burn out. That’s why our retention is 98%.
VAPI Happiness
A two-way satisfaction programme between client and VA — surfacing friction early, in both directions. Issues land on Marike’s desk, not at month six.
Talent Discovery
Our recruitment screen — three aptitude tests, CEO interview, reference checks. Only the top 2–3% of applicants reach a client introduction.

[vac_faq title=”About VAConnect — Frequently Asked Questions”]
[q]Where is VAConnect headquartered?[/q]
[a]Cape Town, South Africa, with active client engagements across the UK, Ireland, USA, Australia, EU and the rest of Africa. Our UK invoicing entity serves British and Irish clients in GBP (or EUR for Irish entities on request).[/a]
[q]How big is the VAConnect team?[/q]
[a]35+ people across operations, matching, training and management — plus our pool of placed VAs. We’re small enough to care, big enough to guarantee quality and stability.[/a]
[q]Are you a marketplace or an agency?[/q]
[a]A fully managed agency. We don’t run a searchable database of strangers. We recruit, screen, train, place and retain every VA on our books. You delegate the work; we handle the person.[/a]
[q]What’s the difference between VAConnect and Boldly, BELAY or Athena?[/q]
[a]All four are managed-VA agencies — and respectable ones. The differences: VAConnect is the only one with proprietary AI-augmented training (VAVarsity), an anti-burnout wellness programme (Atomic Energy), and 17 years of operating history. We’re priced as premium offshore — meaningfully below US-domestic peers — with the same managed standards.[/a]
[q]Why South African talent specifically?[/q]
[a]Three reasons. (1) English fluency — South Africa was ranked the #2 offshore CX destination by the Tholons Index. (2) Time zone — GMT+2 means full UK working day overlap. (3) Cultural alignment — South Africa’s professional services sector grew up on UK and Commonwealth norms.[/a]
[q]How is VAConnect different from a UK VA agency?[/q]
[a]UK VA agencies typically place UK-based freelancers at UK rates (£35–£60/hour or £35K–£60K full-time equivalent). We place fully managed South African remote professionals at roughly half the all-in cost — with proprietary training, wellness and accountability systems they don’t typically run.[/a]
[q]Who owns the IP my VA produces?[/q]
[a]You do. Every engagement includes IP assignment to the client for work product. SOPs, libraries, scripts and assets your VA builds belong to your business.[/a]
[q]Are you POPIA / GDPR compliant?[/q]
[a]Yes. Every VA signs an NDA before introduction. We use Bitrix24 cloud for client data — never local devices. South African POPIA mirrors UK and EU GDPR. We sign DPAs and complete vendor security questionnaires.[/a]
