Managed Virtual Assistant Agency vs Upwork (UK)

Answer first: For UK, Ireland and Scotland buyers, Upwork and similar marketplaces connect you to freelancers you must screen, manage and replace yourself. VAConnect is a managed agency: we recruit exclusively South African professionals, run a role-specific Boiler Room (80%+ to shortlist), and stay on the engagement with dual success managers. Dedicated seats from £818/month, month-to-month, founded 2008, with 98% retention.

Same problem — remote help. Two very different operating models. Here’s how a managed agency compares to a freelance marketplace — without the hype.

Managed, not matched · Boiler Room 80%+ to shortlist · Dual success managers · 98% retention · Month-to-month · SA talent only GDPR/POPIA aligned

The short version

Marketplaces including Upwork and PeoplePerHour are built to connect you with freelancers. You post, compare proposals, hire, manage, and replace.

VAConnect is a managed agency. We recruit South African professionals, pressure-test them in a role-specific Boiler Room, shortlist with scores, onboard, coach both sides, and replace if the fit cannot be repaired.

Neither model is wrong. They solve different jobs.

When each model fits

Marketplace / Upwork often fits when…

What “managed” actually includes

  1. Founder-led strategy call with Karen van Zyl (CEO) to diagnose the gap
  2. Welcome pack — transparency, not a trap
  3. Nikki builds the brief and the Boiler Room, a 45-minute day-in-your-life simulation
  4. Only 80%+ scores reach your shortlist
  5. You interview 3–4 people on Zoom
  6. Dual success managers after start, VAVarsity, Atomic Energy, and an SOP on every account
  7. Month-to-month; remediate then replace if needed

FAQ

Are you “like Upwork but for South Africa”?

No. Upwork is a marketplace. VAConnect is a managed agency. We run recruitment, Boiler Room screening, placement, and ongoing support for UK, Ireland, and Scotland clients.

Can I still interview candidates?

Yes — and we encourage it. You meet the shortlist on Zoom. The difference is you already have scored Boiler Room evidence, not just polished proposals.

What if the placement doesn’t work?

We remediate with success support. If the fit cannot be repaired, we replace under our managed model — month-to-month, without a long lock-in.

Why South Africa specifically for a UK business?

It is our only talent market by design: strong English for UK and Irish client-facing work, near-simultaneous GMT/BST and SAST (GMT+2) overlap, and a bench we know how to screen and support. See our timezone map.

Is a managed agency always the better choice?

No. If you want a one-week design burst and will project-manage it yourself, a marketplace can be right. If you want an ongoing remote seat with accountability after day one, managed is usually the better fit.

Done gambling on profiles?

Tell us what failed last time (or what you’re afraid will fail). We’ll map whether a managed VAConnect seat is the right model — or say so if it isn’t.
